Every anime has that one character who is useless to a fault. The anime’s plot would have zero impact with or without them. Overall, their existence is just pointless for the story. In today’s article, we are going to be counting down 10 such characters who are infamously hated for being useless.
Before we start, I must mention that a couple of these characters are not completely good for nothing. They have their good points, but they have just become popular because their good points don’t shine as brightly as their bad ones. Moreover, you can literally count the worthy things they’ve done by hand, whereas the things they could’ve done but didn’t are always more.
So, you might or might not agree, but every character in this listing is useless, in my opinion.
List of the Most Useless Characters in All of Anime
- Taizou Hasegawa (Gintama)
- Lisanna (Fairy Tail)
- Sakura (Naruto)
- Kon (Bleach)
- Magicarp (Pokemon)
- Tea Gardner (Yu-Gi-Oh!)
- Aqua (Konosuba)
- Mr. Satan (Dragon Ball Z)
- Excalibur (Soul Eater)
- Yamcha (Dragon Ball)
- Yajirobe (Dragon Ball)
11. Taizou Hasegawa (Gintama)
Taizou is a useless character from the anime Gintama, and he knows it. He is fully aware of the fact that he is pointless and insignificant. This is why he constantly tries to kill himself. As far as the plot is concerned, he is truly a pointless existence that has no impact.
However, he is also a comedy character and is designed to be that way. His role is to make viewers laugh at him, which he has definitely achieved.
10. Lisanna (Fairy Tail)
In all honesty, Lisanna turned out to be a huge disappointment. With all the flashback scenes that feature Lisanna, you’d think she would be a valuable part of the guild once she returned.
However, her being in the guild changed nothing. It just added one more head to the guild count. She is weak; she always needs someone to protect her, and she does not even try to become stronger. At least she could’ve done something on the romance part because she clearly seemed to like Natsu when she was a child. But she blew that up too.
Now, I’m not denying the fact that she is one of the best waifu materials in Fairy Tail, but her involvement in the plot really stopped with the flashbacks.
9. Sakura (Naruto)
Sakura is more of a hated anime character than a useless anime character. I mean, she is useless in battles, and she is a disgrace as a ninja. But she excels at healing and not necessarily at combat.
But what makes fans think that her existence is pointless is the fact that she always gets beaten by villains and calls Naruto for help. Her only role in fights is literally to call Naruto to fight her battles.
Not only that, she also does not have any gratitude for Naruto’s self-sacrifice and always fawns over Sasuke.
8. Kon (Bleach)
Kon is the mascot of the Bleach anime and literally has a pointless existence as a character in the show. The only reason I could think of is that back then, mascot characters were a thing, and Bleach’s author probably thought he should add one too.
Of course, other than being useless, Kon is annoying too. I’m pretty sure nobody would have missed him if he just disappeared out of thin air.
7. Magicarp (Pokemon)
Here is an infamously useless anime character who has literally no use as a Pokemon. This fish-looking pokemon is weak in water and is even weaker on land.
All it can do is one move, and it is pretty much pointless to even own it as a Pokemon trainer. At the very least, I think it would have served a better purpose if it had become a Pokemon delicacy.
6. Tea Gardner (Yu-Gi-Oh!)
Tea is one of the main characters from Yugioh who literally serves no purpose. She is not a good duelist, she is not fanservice material, and she is not even in a romantic relationship with the MC.
She is this pointless friend who always hangs out with the main group despite contributing nothing. Her deck is literally trash, with only weak monsters that look cute. Seriously, she could’ve done a better job than creating a deck based on cuteness.
5. Aqua (Konosuba)
Here comes the banner girl of uselessness. Whenever we think of useless anime characters, the first one that comes to mind is Aqua from Konosuba. She is a goddess who acts all high and mighty but is brainless.
Not only does she have water for brains, but she is also stupid enough to not know how to use her powers. All she does is cause trouble for Kazuma and make him fix her mistakes.
But she does fine as a comedy character, and let’s not forget her juicy role in Konosuba Doujins, for which I’m grateful for her existence.
4. Mr. Satan (Dragon Ball Z)
Every Dragon Ball Z fan knows that Mr. Satan is a useless character in the anime who hogs all the hard-earned glory of Goku.
While he is a weak and pathetic fighter, he claims to be the strongest in the world. He took credit for Goku’s victories against villains and fooled the people in order to become rich.
But, I guess, the only time his existence had a point was when he changed Buu’s heart unintentionally.
3. Excalibur (Soul Eater)
Nobody likes Excalibur, even in the Soul Eater universe. He is a useless and pointless anime character who is extremely annoying.
This thing never closes its mouth and makes you want to break your head if that means not listening to its voice.
While Excalibur is a famous sword that is supposed to be powerful, it is completely useless thanks to its runny mouth.
2. Yamcha (Dragon Ball)
Other than Aqua, the only other person who represents all useless anime characters is Yamcha.
The sad thing about him is that he trains hard. He also tries hard to help. But what can he do? He is just no match for the other monsterous martial artists.
In literally every battle he has fought, he is one of the first characters to get KO’d. At this point, he just becomes a liability. Despite being weak, he always shows up on the frontlines and gets himself killed.
However, he did learn his lesson and stop being a martial artist for a while after realizing he was nowhere near the level of other Z fighters.
1. Yajirobe (Dragon Ball)
I was legit excited when Yajirobe was introduced. He seemed like a cool, rouge-hero type of character who looked like a fat Krillin with a wig.
All of those expectations came crashing down when he turned out to be a huge disappointment. He literally did one good thing for Goku, and that’s it.
Yajirobe has powers, but he never uses them. This is not only because he is selfish; he is a scaredy-cat. Out of the countless times he could’ve assisted Goku, he chose to run away and hide. At least Yamcha tries, but this little man doesn’t even think about it. This is why I think Yajirobe deserves the number one spot on this list.
