‘Kamisama Kiss’ (also known as ‘Kamisama Hajimemashita’) stands as a Japanese manga series crafted by Julietta Suzuki, who also brings its illustrations to life. The show quickly gained popularity among Shoujo fans, and it has had two seasons so far. However, will season 3 of Kamisama Kiss actually happen? There has been no word from the producers in eight years which leads to concern.
Kamisama Hajimemashita manga started publication in February 2008 and ended in May 2016 with a total of 25 volumes.
Akitaro Daichi directed the anime adaptation that TMS Entertainment brought to us. Premiering in October 2012, the series rapidly captured hearts. Funimation streamed this enchanting show, and the second season graced screens in January 2015. Yet the looming question remains: will there be a third season? Here’s the scoop on what you should know.

Back in October 2012, the series kicked off. The second season graced Japan’s screens from January 6 to March 31, 2015. Despite over eight years passing, no word on a third season has surfaced. Instead, there have been several OVA episodes released that cover the ending of the manga. This suggests that we will not be getting a third season of Kamisama Kiss.
However, the OVA’s rush through the last few volumes of the manga, which is not satisfying for fans. Besides, even the OVAs didn’t adapt the final chapters.
So, there is a possibility that it might be adapted properly into a final season. Or, like Spice and Wolf, it might get a new rebooted version, where the anime starts over from the beginning.
Kamisama Kiss Season 3 Release Date & Status
Regrettably, there’s no news about Kamisama Kiss: Season 3. Neither the production company nor the animation studio has announced the release date or confirmed production.
Like I mentioned above, the OVAs skip most of the manga and adapts the volumes near the end. So, it seems improbable to get a new sequel, though not impossible.
If the producers desire, they could make a proper adaptation of the final volumes of the manga and release it as a third season. After all, it just doesn’t feel right to animate the ending of a series as an OVA instead of a proper sequel.
While the chances are low, there might still be some hope for a Kamisama Kiss season 3.
Is There Enough Source Material For A Sequel?
The Kamisama Hajimemashita manga officially ended in May 20, 2016 with a total 25 volumes and 149 chapters.
The first two seasons of the anime covers the story until chapter 64 of the manga. The OVA episodes skip through a lot of events and adapts the story from chapter 65-100.
That leaves us with only 49 more chapters, which is not enough for a new season that is 12 episodes long. So, the only way there will be enough source material is if the third season covers the arcs from chapter 65 and retells the story that has already been covered in the OVA episodes.
What Will Happen In Kamisama Kiss Season 3?
As noted earlier, Kamisama Kiss: Season 3 might embrace the manga chapters untouched by the OVAs. Season 2 concluded at Chapter 64.
For those intrigued by Himemiko and Kotaro’s bond, good news awaits in the last manga volume. Challenges arise as their forbidden relationship faces divine opposition. Meanwhile, Kotaro remains unaware of Himemiko’s yokai nature.
Alternatively, exploring the chapters post-OVAs, specifically from Chapter 100, is an option. It delves into Nanami and Tomoe’s content life together, with Tomoe now human and Nanami leading a regular existence.

Which Studio Will Animate The Next Season?
So far, all the seasons and OVAs of Kamisama Kiss has been adapted by TMS Entertainment studio. So, if we were to get a new season of the series, we can be sure that TMS Entertainment will be the one to continue the anime adaptation.
However, if a rebooted version is decided to release, then the studio might change. Normally, the same stuido will not work on rebooted versions, so things might be uncertain in this scenario.

Currently, the first two seasons of Kamisama Kiss is available to stream on Crunchyroll and Funimation. This means that the above mentioned streaming companies have the license to host any new season of Kamisama Hajimemashita. So, if we ever get a new sequel, it is sure to be updated in the database of Crunchyroll and Funimation.
