Barakamon, a Japanese fantasy anime, debuted on July 6, 2014, adapting Satsuki Yoshino’s manga. The 12-episode run ended on September 27 of the same year. The spin-off series, Handa-Kun, arrived two years later, tracing the original’s roots.

Barakamon Season 2 Release Date & Status
Kinema Citrus produced the debut season of the anime series. It gained praise from viewers and critics. However, their focus shifted to a spin-off. After two years, rather than releasing Barakamon Season 2, Handa-Kun Season 1 was launched.
Fans understood the shortage of source material and didn’t object to Handa-Kun’s release. However, it has already been nine years since then. However, the studio has not yet given an official update about the second season of Barakamon.
Both the original anime and its spin-off were popular, with more stories to tell from Satsuki Yoshino’s 19-volume manga.
Although busy, the studio has ample material for Barakamon Season 2. Yet its revival after nine years seems unlikely due to its decreased popularity. Regardless, hardcore fans still await the studio’s decision on a potential second season.
Is There Enough Source Material For A Sequel?
At the article’s start, we noted that Satsuki Yoshino wrote and illustrated the original manga. Square Enix published it in Gangan Online. Yen Press handles the English version.
The manga’s popularity is evident, with over 4 million copies circulated in Japan. The key question remains whether there is sufficient content for a second season.
The manga shares the anime’s name and spans 19 volumes so far in 2023. The manga series is still ongoing, but the author took a 4-year break from 2018 to 2022.
The latest nineteenth volume was released recently, on July 12, 2023. Despite the long break, there is still more than enough source material for the second season of Barakamon.
Season 1 covered the first six volumes, representing a 1/3 adaptation rate per volume and hinting at potential material for two more seasons.
What Will Happen In Barakamon Season 2?
Barakamon’s unique, artistic story glorifies love for art and culture. The tale revolves around an exceptional artist, unparalleled in skill. His work garnered accolades, attracting jealousy and corrupt punishment from higher-ups.

Which Studio Will Animate The Next Season?
Kinema Citrus is the studio that handled the first season of Barakamon. The company was established in 2008 and has created several popular shows since then. Some of their works include, “The Rising of the Shield Hero,”, “Made In Abyss”, and “Black Bullet”.
Since 2019, Kinema Citrus has partnered with “KADOKAWA Bushiroad.” This is a troublesome thing because Square Enix, Barakamon’s producer, is their rival. Which means, the chances of Kinema Citrus working with Square Enix on a sequel are very low.
Not to mention, the prequel, Handa-kun, was also not the work of Kinema Citrus. Square Enix gave the adaptation task to Studio Diomedéa instead.
So, I’d say that Diomedea has a better chance of working on Barakamon season 2 compared to Kinema Citrus.
