Otaku no Video revolves around the life of a normal guy, Ken Kubo, with a normal job until he gets involved with an Otaku named Tanaka. He then drowns into the world of Otakus and becomes one after getting betrayed by the people he cared about. However, Kubo is not the only one who accepts the fact that he’s lonely. People all across Japan are also accepting their Otaku lifestyle.
8. 3D Kanojo: Real Girl
3D Kanojo revolves around the life of a loner and a neet who loves staying inside all day and playing games, a pure otaku indeed. He’s satisfied with his life as he’s able to play some virtual reality games where he’s able to have 2D girlfriends. One day, he encounters an extremely popular girl named Iroha while cleaning a pool and his life completely changes.
There’s no anime about otaku that is more accurate than Watamote when it comes to the awkwardness/cringeness related an Otaku’s life. Watamote involves a pure otaku named Tomoke who has practiced how to act in high school by dating 100 guys in video games. She’s ready to face the troubles of high school and try her luck in being popular. However, months pass and she’s still not able to make any friends. Will Tomoko get over her social anxiety and get popular for real this time?
6. Bottom-Tier Character Tomozaki kun
Tomozaki is an expert video gamer but when it comes to playing the game of real life, he’s definitely a loser. He wishes to fit in with his classmates but always fails since he does not know how to communicate. Aoi Hinami is another expert gamer who excels both in video games and the game of real life. She wishes to help Tomozaki in making friends. But will Tomozaki be able to learn something from her?
5. Saekano: How To Raise A Boring Girlfriend
Tomoya Aki is a high school student who loves watching anime and playing video games. He comes across a girl and is greatly impressed with her. This inspires him to create a game after her. Now, he must get help from some of the weirdest people in his school. He soon finds out that the girl he was greatly impressed by was none other than her boring classmate, Megumi.
4. No Game No Life
The story of No Game No Life revolves around Sora and Shiro who are two siblings. They’re actually NEETS who stay inside all day and play video games. One day, they receive an invitation from a game and end up beating it without even breaking a sweat. After winning, both of them get transported to another world, most probably inside a video game. This new world decides everything based on competitions and games. Now, the pair must win each competition to climb up the ranks and become the best.
3. Denpa Kyoushi
Junichiro Kagami is a genius who has accomplished a lot in science. Despite being a genius, Junichiro loves to stay inside and immerse in the world of anime and games as an adult. Now, he must find a job in real life as his sister can’t take it anymore. She gets him a job at a school where he must teach students. This is the last thing Junichiro wanted to do. Will he be able to get over his fears and do his job well?
2. Monthly Girls’ Nozaki-Kun
This anime doesn’t have an MC who has an unhealthy obsession with anime. Then why have we added it to this list of anime about Otaku you ask? Because, the MC is a mangaka who loves manga. Umetaro Nozaki who is apparently a well known shojo manga artist under the name of Sakiko is actually a loner in real life. When Chiyo Sakura, a cute girl, confesses that she has a crush on him, nozaki misunderstands it and thinks she’s a fan of him. After learning about his true identity, Sakura decides to become Nozaki’s assistant to get close to him. Both of them also get help from some of their schoolmates while working on Nozaki’s manga.
When rom-com fans think of anime about otaku, we think of Wotakoi (It literally has (w)otaku in its title after all). Narumi Momose keeps hiding the fact that she’s an Otaku since her previous boyfriends broke up with her after learning this about her. She meets her childhood friend who is also an otaku at her new workplace. She tells him not to reveal her identity to anyone at work to which he agrees. Her friend wants to help her and proposes to her to become his girlfriend. This way, she won’t have her heart broken again and again and they would actually get along well. Narumi accepts his proposal and they both start dating. They still have to hide the fact that they’re both otakus from other people.
