The God of Highschool – Anime Review

This article, The God of Highschool Anime Review is a guest post written by Codebreaker. More about the author at the end of the post!

The God of Highschool hit the South Korean Webcomic series on Webtoon back in 2011. The series is still ongoing and now includes nearly 500 chapters. It has successfully made its way to the HALL OF FAME as one of the first in a new wave of Korean anime to achieve global readership on its first debut.

God Of Highschool tells the tale of Jin Mo-Ri, a 17-year-old martial artist from Seoul, South Korea, and his closest allies, Han Daewi and Yoo Mira brought together in a comedic altercation that shows off their unique battle abilities while contrasting up their personalities to build character fast. Jin is invited to join a martial arts tournament, sponsored by an unknown, mysterious organization. With fighters from around the world participating, only the most skillful warrior will take the grand prize.

“The only thing on the line is your pride! The only thing you can trust is your fists! Choose any wish, and it will be granted! Such is the power of God!” So begins the battle royal featuring the most powerful contenders from all over the globe.

God of High School Episode 1 Review – But Why Tho?

Jin Mori, who lives on his own after parting ways with his grandfather Taejin at a young age. He made his trip to the aforementioned tournament’s preliminaries for his region. On his way there, he meets newly formed friends and fellow tournament participants Han Daewi and Yoo Mira. They pursue a purse snatcher on a bike in the zaniest, cartoonish way possible. MAPPA does a great job of providing some intense chase scenes and effects as the 3 chases down the would-be thief. It’s quite obvious the primary goal of the chase sequence was to show us a glimpse of the fighting moves, physical prowess, and personalities of the trio while also being hilariously entertaining.

The Characters

The first episode succeeded in introducing us to the cast of characters in the most explosive way possible. With surprisingly low introductions, dialogue, or back story, it dives straight into action to give people what they want to see.

Jin Mori

A sixteen-year-old whose renewal taekwondo, which he learned from his grandfather, makes him undefeatable. Nothing is more important to him than being the best fighter of all. His current record out of 299 fights is 297 wins and 2 draws. He decides to participate in the God of High School tournament, an interdisciplinary martial arts competition, after suffering the first loss of his life against Judge R, one of the tournament’s judges.

Han Daewi

One of the “Mad Cows,” a duo that once controlled the entire Gangnam area. He’s been working part-time jobs to pay the medical bills for his partner in the duo Woo Seung-Tae, who fell ill with an incurable disease. But the part-time work available to high schoolers is barely enough to cover the daily medical bills and won’t cover a cure. He joins GOH after being told that he can save his friend if he wins.

Yoo Mira

The God Of Highschool Yoo Mira

The 25th Master of the Moon Light Sword Style. She pretends to be a fragile high schooler, but she has been training since she was a child and has become a skilled sword player. She prefers guys who are tough and strong. This is because she’s been told that she needs to marry a man strong enough to help her resurrect her family’s sword style. For that reason, she’s participating in GOH.

It’s hard not to be amused when these three lay out their respective motivations for proving themselves the best high-school fighter in Seoul. Mira wants to rebuild the family dojo by passing on her late father’s Moon Light Sword Style to a strong man. Daewi wants money. Jin wants to get stronger because of course he does – he even looks a bit like Goku which was a result of the creator being such a huge fan of Dragon Ball Z.

Animation & Production

The component of the episode I appreciated the most was the overall impressive production level. The character’s movements while sporadic were fluid. The fight scenes were well done and the character design was quite accurate to their webcomic depictions. Those who read the webcomic will know the adrenaline-fueled ride the anime is expected to provide. With multiple characters facing off in a grand battle royal, including different sets of fictional and real-world fighting moves, it’s quite difficult not to be excited.

The fighting choreography moves from one character to the next during the grand fighting scene in the arena. It showed off an impressive amount of fluidity between each motion. Studio MAPPA has done an excellent job yet again, and hopefully, the animation maintains its quality throughout.

The artwork was amazing and it’s quite easy to distinguish the character’s expression, and the background scenery was also well made. Also, the way the artist drew the fighting scenes was awesomely made into anime. And I love every fight scene that I have encountered on reading. There will be a ton of characters that will be introduced along the way who did matter in the story plot and how it progressed, which I honestly liked.

If you haven’t seen the first episode of The God of Highschool, it’s available to stream right now on the Crunchyroll website. Also, you guys should go and download the app “Webtoon” which is available in the play store.
